Garofoli has been a name in the Marche for a long time, and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is the appellation that made the grape famous. This is the unoaked version, the purest expression of the variety, from a vintage that has had time to settle into itself.

  • Verdicchio, the grape of the Marche.
  • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, the appellation.
  • 2016, a warm year in central Italy.
  • 12.5% ABV, dry, medium body.
  • Unoaked, fermented and aged in stainless steel.

How it is made

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is a white wine appellation in the Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast. The rules require Verdicchio and nothing else. This bottling sees no oak, so the grape's natural acidity and mineral edge stay intact instead of being rounded off by barrel influence.

How it tastes

Zesty lemon and green apple up front, with a mineral, almost saline quality underneath. The finish is the signature: a bitter almond note that lingers after the fruit fades. High acidity keeps it lean and focused, and the low tannin makes it clean rather than grippy.

Good to know

Verdicchio has been grown in the Marche since at least the fourteenth century, and the wine was historically shipped in amphora-shaped bottles that became so associated with the grape that they are still used today. The bitter almond finish is considered the variety's fingerprint, the thing that separates Verdicchio from other Italian whites.

Contains sulphites.
